EFT Tapping to Clear Negative Thoughts - Step 1

Emotional Freedom Technique is a quick, easy and powerful energy psychology that you can use for a huge assortment of issues.  Created by Gary Craig in the 1990's by drawing on a few other techniques, EFT has grown in popularity.  Now after years of work it has reached the status of an evidenced based treatment modality per the American Psychological Association.   The best way to think about it is that EFT is like acupuncture without needles.

If you want more information, here is a video created by Gary Craig to explain Emotional Freedom Technique and you can check out the EFT Universe website linked on the left.  Sounds too good to be true?  No worries; you do not have to believe though I hope you will be open to giving it a try.

EFT can be used on anything. In fact since I started using EFT ten years ago, I have yet to meet anyone who EFT does not work on.  If for some reason you find that it does not work for you, email me and let's see if we can figure out why.  For now, I want to get you started on adding this amazing and simply technique to your program.

Pull the subconscious weeds

As you are working to focus on positive thoughts, repeating affirmations and visualizing what you want to attract to your life, most likely your brain will start spewing out the negative garbage.  Visualize that new car and suddenly your brain says, "I'll never do that."  "I'm not good enough for that."  "I'm dreaming, this is all BS."  There are lots of reasons why this happens (read about the "Evil Cube"), one of them being part of you works really hard to keep everything in your life "the same", even at great cost to yourself. Since you want to change, it becomes important not to let those negative thoughts sabotage your efforts.

My personal belief is that our purpose in life is to reach our potential, whatever that looks like.  If you believe your purpose is to serve God, then of course you would want to do that to the best of your ability. If your purpose is to be successful, then again you would want to do your best.  Relationships, family, finances, material possessions, art, religion, whatever your personal focus is up to you.  My belief is that we have an innate desire and even responsibility to reach for our potential.  As as such, we strive for goodness, truth, justice, honesty.  We may not always follow those values, but I believe they are inherent inside of us.  An inner drive that is in our bones and DNA.

As such, negativity, self sabotaging beliefs, self doubt, self criticism, and all the negative hijacking thoughts really do not belong in side of us. So when we tap on those negative beliefs, we weed them out. When we tap on positive thoughts, we plant those seeds.  Try EFT on the negative beliefs that pop up in your mental rehearsal and you'll see what I mean.  That's what I am suggesting you use EFT for in this exercise.

Learning EFT and using it in your mental rehearsal

Here is a great video explaining how to do EFT.  That's the long version.  What I would like you to do during your mental rehearsal is the short version.  Here is a quick video on what the short version looks likes when done on "stress".  When you are working on focusing on something and you have a negative, doubtful through try to interrupt your mental rehearsal, pause and tap on that negative weed.  It will only take you about ten seconds, then go back to where you were. I will bet you find that the thought is gone.  If it comes back; tap again. Eventually I believe you will see that it fades until gone for ever.  Pretty cool.

Create your "Ten Things" List
Sit and create a list of ten negative or distressing thoughts, feelings, memories, fears or anxieties.  Every day when you start this routine, tap on two to four of them.  Each time, notice how strong the intensity of feeling is connected with each one. As you tap on each one over time, I believe you will find them less and less distressing.

Try it on everything anytime you want

EFT is quick, easy, painless, not addicting, free and has zero negative side effects.  If you have a physical pain, emotion, health issues, anxiety, phobia, it you have a negative thought or even a craving, give it a try it and see what happens.  Ask yourself on a scale of zero to ten how big the issue feels. Tap and then ask yourself again.  If it isn't a zero, tap some more until it goes to zero.

One great way to work on pulling more of the "subconscious weeds" outside of your mental rehearsal time is called the Personal Peace Plan.  Read about it here.
